I love digital TV. All my friends in Melbourne have it, and it kicks major arse. Better quality, less interference, and with a digital set top hard disk recorder, you’ll never miss a show. And ABC2! Even though everyone says it’s totally lame, I still wanna watch “Good Game” to get some hot tips of those l33t gamexzors.
The digital reception where I live is pathetic, which sucks. Using five maps from the reception locator over at DBA, I compiled a map of digital tv coverage to illustrate why. There’s rumoured to be a demo of digital TV set up in the local Harvey Norman since they installed a really high antenna, but I’ve never seen it. Apparently, there is a digital broadcast tower planned for Hay. It’s scheduled for August 2007 which is still too far off in my opinion. I want it now! Taping shows onto VHS is, like, so 1990.
EDIT: I just found a page at the ABC stating that digital TV is planned for June 2007.

I’ve found what I propose is the most expensive merchandise t-shirt ever. The shirt sports the slogan “I’m an escaper of the Crimson Room” and is from FASCO-CS, the home of those puzzles where you have to escape from a hideously challenging Flash dungeon. And lets face it, when it comes to prisons of doom, Flash is up there with the scariest.
But that’s beside the point! The t-shirt is priced at 7,500 Japanese yen, which equates to $75.52 Australian dollars (at time of writing). Now, I’ve heard the cost of living in Japan is pretty high, but this is just ridiculous. For a second I even thought, maybe they were one of those weird countries that use a comma for their decimal point, but no. It’s just bloody expensive.
It makes me wonder how many fans “wear this t-shirts and show your love to escaping!” None by the looks of the dead ordering link. Now before you search Google and eBay to find a more expensive shirt, you can only count merchandise shirts, and auctions are disqualified. And none of that signed or celebrity shit, OK? That’s just cheating. If anyone finds a more expensive t-shirt, please post a comment ^_^

A couple of days ago, I was searching Flickr for some abstract wallpapers, and found this one, which I thought was pretty impressive for spinning around with a camera. So I resized it and tweaked the colours a bit and used it as my wallpaper. But it wouldn’t end there…
Today I thought I’d try my hand at making some abstract wallpapers of my own. Only one rule: they must all use real photos as the source material. It was quite fun, and I learnt a bit more about the different effects of shutter speeds on my camera, too.
View the full wallpapers photo set. The remixed one is in there as well.

I’ve finally found a solution to a weird problem I’ve been having in Windows Explorer (XP) that’s been annoying the hell out of me. This was so annoying it’s blogworthy. I couldn’t open multiple files using the right click menu which seriously affected my ability to use the Flickr Uploadr tool. I’d click “Send to Flickr” and the hourglass flashes for a second but nothing happens. I tried googling a while ago but had given up until today when I finally got fed up.
After refining the search terms to “windows explorer” “multiple files” “right click” menu not working I came across a page from MCP Magazine (linked above). The article recommends a utility called ShellExView that lets you view the installed file extensions.
I tried disabling a few extensions one at a time, testing each time. I disabled one called MShellExtMenu which is part of MagicISO, a utility that lets you mount and edit ISO images. Suddenly my right click menu sprang back into life! Yay for ShellExView and nay for MagicISO (but I forgive it since it’s useful).
After trying several chips of laptop RAM I had lying around with no success, I ordered 64MB RAM for my Toshiba Satellite 2510CDS. It’s running as a text-only Slackware Linux server so it doesn’t need a huge amount of memory but for AU$34 from Kahlon.com I thought an extra 64MB would be nice. I ordered the RAM on April 12th and it arrived yesterday, which is just under 2 weeks. I opted for the povo snail-mail shipping and their site said to allow 4-6 weeks, so I’m impressed. And the RAM worked! W00t!

Am I the only one who’s noticed that the SBS Mythbusters site has been hacked? Pushing German viagra is not something you’d expect Mythbusters or SBS to be doing, is it? And why this site? Simply a scanner bot exploiting a standard vulnerability it’s found? Or is someone trying to say something about Jamie and Adam’s…umm…libido?
The screenshot was taken a few minutes ago and I’m about to email SBS as they appear not to have noticed… As a slightly related note (in that it’s about another geeky show on SBS) Nerds FC season 1 repeats started today, and I’ve calculated this has been timed so they’re finished by the premiere of season 2 on June 9th. New nerds, new coaches… should be interesting. I’m counting down the days. Hey, maybe I should put the old counter back up…
When I started to write this post I realised I was writing my first post about Blizzard, which is kind of cool considering they provided the inspiration for my domain name. Yay for Blizzard! :-)
Last Monday night, the much coveted title of “Funniest South Park Episode Ever” was awarded to a new winner! Previously held by the Chinpokomon episode, Make Love, Not Warcraft has knocked off its predecessor with merciless vigour to stand triumphantly as the sole victor.
The episode is a no-holds-barred parody of the Bilzzard MMORPG World of Warcraft and the gamers who play it. I won’t say too much but the basic plot is about a WoW player who’s going around killing other characters without first agreeing to a duel, thus ruining the game for everyone. The player’s character has become so powerful that he can’t be controlled by the WoW admins. All being avid WoW fans, the South Park gang resolve to defeat the character and reclaim their game.
You’ve got the classic South Park over-the-top humour but this time with a geek edge. The portrayal of ubergamers is so hilariously accurate, it’s almost scary. I liked Chinpokomon for the same reason. Matt & Trey parodied otakus and the Japanese flawlessly, and I could relate, being a closet Pokemon junkie myself.
But what’s most impressive is how machinima is used to represent the in-game action. A theme throughout the episode is that for the players, the World (of Warcraft) *is* their world, having no lives outside the game. The in-game action illustrates how the boys take the game world much more seriously than their real lives. Now I’m just waiting for someone to make a WoW machinima series, in the tradition of Red vs. Blue.
If you’ve ever played any of the Warcraft games, this episode is an absolute must! Hardcore WoW fans beware though. Before watching I suggest you equip your Sense of Humour shields and +9 Insult Slaying knives as this episode may will most definitely offend any WoW fans unable to laugh at themselves.
Edit: I forgot to mention, this episode was made with the full support of Blizzard, which just supports my theory that Blizzard are just the best damn game makers out there ;-)

Tonight I experienced a very weird phenomenon. After watching The Chaser’s War on Everything, I was overcome by a wave of some sort of emotion. It was hard to pinpoint at first. It’s that emotion that forces you to consider the consequences of your actions and extrapolate to identify things you probably shouldn’t do in the future. You know the one. The one that stops most people from making the joke that Bindy Irwin would be snorting her father’s ashes at the Logies. The one that makes you think twice before conducting man-on-man BDSM in pubic places, complete with prosthetic breasts and gratuitous incest references. It’s the emotion that is so obviously lacking in every member of the Chaser team.
Eventually it dawned on me that I was feeling guilt. Their jokes and stunts are *so* horrendous that it actually induces a physiological empathetic guilt response. I sit there watching, feeling like what I’m doing is somehow “just wrong.” I think “I really shouldn’t be watching this, let alone enjoying it.”
Thankfully, this wears off after about 30 seconds and I go straight to the laptop and download the episode so I can watch it again ;-)
