Windows Annoyances

I’ve finally found a solution to a weird problem I’ve been having in Windows Explorer (XP) that’s been annoying the hell out of me. This was so annoying it’s blogworthy. I couldn’t open multiple files using the right click menu which seriously affected my ability to use the Flickr Uploadr tool. I’d click “Send to Flickr” and the hourglass flashes for a second but nothing happens. I tried googling a while ago but had given up until today when I finally got fed up.

After refining the search terms to “windows explorer” “multiple files” “right click” menu not working I came across a page from MCP Magazine (linked above). The article recommends a utility called ShellExView that lets you view the installed file extensions.

I tried disabling a few extensions one at a time, testing each time. I disabled one called MShellExtMenu which is part of MagicISO, a utility that lets you mount and edit ISO images. Suddenly my right click menu sprang back into life! Yay for ShellExView and nay for MagicISO (but I forgive it since it’s useful).
